Plastic bags are non-biodegradable and its disposal may make land in-fertile due to impervious nature, choke the open drains and cause death of cattle’s on ingestion. Littered plastics spoil beauty of the city and make many important public places filthy.Garbage containing plastics when burnt in open may cause air pollution problem and particularly burning of plastics may emit obnoxious gases. Garbage mixed with plastics interferes in waste processing facilities and may also cause problems in landfill operations.
Trial run was conducted at ACC Ltd., Kymore, M.P. in March 2008 with 1.5% of Plastic waste as supplementary fuel to coal. Plastics co processed during trial burn are: ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene), PBT (Poly Butylene Terephthalat), PET, PP (Poly Propylene) , HDPE, and PS (Polystyrene).
Various pollutants Parameters including Dioxins were monitored during each phase by USEPA Methods employing SGS Ltd. Kiln Emission measurement results; No abnormal variations in kin stack parameters, including in Dioxins / Furans, were observed from the kiln with or without plastic wastes, No impact on the quality of cement Successful trial run at ACC Kymore has revealed that problem of plastic waste disposal can be solved up to a great extent.Co-processing of Plastic wastes in Cement Kiln will go a long way in solving the disposal problem of plastic waste in the country.
